Services, help and fun for seniors in November

Thrift Shop Jewellery Silent Auction – Nov. 2 – Nov. 14
Looking for a unique Christmas gift? Thanks to the generosity of donors Prince Edward Community Care’s Thrift Shop receives the most amazing donations and offers them at a Silent Auction. Maybe you’re looking for a unique gift or want to view the various exceptional and exciting jewellery pieces that come to the Thrift Shop. These items are on display at 153 Main St., Picton. Bidding starts on the Monday at 1pm and closes at 2pm sharp on the Saturday. 100 per cent of the funds raised support programs for seniors in Prince Edward County. www.communitycareforseniors.org

Seniors Support TV Show – Nov. 3rd
Watch a new edition of the show “Seniors’ Support” only on TVCogeco at 7 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. The topic is Downsizing for Seniors. This show is co-produced by the Executive Directors of Prince Edward Community Care and Community Care for South Hastings. If you miss the show on the 3rd, check your local listings for when it will be shown again.

Seniors Luncheon Social – Nov. 4th in Picton
Seniors are welcome to attend Prince Edward Community Care’s Seniors Luncheon Social in Picton on Wednesday, November 4th. Bill Grieve, the chef with Wheel House and Occasions Catering, is preparing homemade soup, roast loin of pork, apple sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes, vegetables, coleslaw, bread and butter, lemon meringue pie or fruit, coffee and tea for $10 per person. Reserve your place by the Tuesday prior at noon by calling 613-476-7493. Seniors are asked to bring their own soup bowl, plate, cup and cutlery. If you can’t come to the hall for this meal it can be delivered to housebound seniors who live in or near Picton. If you wish to have a take-out meal, please advise when you register. The price is the same for take-out and eat in.

55 ALIVE Mature Driving Classroom Refresher Course –Nov. 12th
A 55-Alive safe driving course for seniors will be held on Thursday, November 12th at the Prince Edward Community Care office in Picton. This course is from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The Canada Safety Council developed this mature driver retraining program and it is designed specifically to help older drivers improve their driving skills. The cost is $30.00 per person, which includes workbook, refreshments and a light lunch. Call 613-476-7493 to register or for more information. Space is limited so call today.

Reserve your place by the Tuesday prior at 12 noon by calling 613-476-7493. Seniors are asked to bring their own soup bowl, plate, cup and cutlery. If you can’t come to the hall for this meal it can be delivered to housebound seniors who live in or near Wellington. If you wish to have a take-out meal, please advise when you register. The price is the same for take-out and eat in.

Tai Chi – Starts again on Jan. 18th
Beginner and continuation Tai Chi classes are held regularly at Prince Edward Community Care. Tai Chi is a way to help seniors stay fit and flexible. Tai Chi is a low-impact form of exercise, but it is also a weight bearing exercise, which is an important component of managing osteoporosis. Some of the benefits of Tai Chi are: better balance, which lowers the risk for falls, less pain and stiffness, stress relief and increased calmness and sense of well-being. And to top it off, it also helps to improve memory. No experience is necessary and all fitness levels are welcome. If you’re a senior who would benefit from Tai Chi and would like to give it a try, call the Prince Edward Community Care office at 613-476-7493 to register. Space is limited.

Delivery to your door of nutritious meals for seniors
Delivery to your door of a hot nutritious noon-time meal means daily contact with a volunteer to help you stay safe and well in your own home. Prince Edward Community Care offers both hot and frozen meals to seniors and to clients of Hospice Prince Edward or the Alzheimer Society of Prince Edward County. To apply for Meals on Wheels or to refer someone, call 613-476-7493. Staff can make home visits to explain this and other services. www.communitycareforseniors.org

Telephone Reassurance Program
Prince Edward Community Care has supportive volunteers that can offer companionship, encouragement and warm friendly conversation to seniors to help alleviate loneliness and help keep people safe. A daily phone call can help maintain independence. To participate, call Prince Edward Community Care at 613-476-7493.

Friendly Visiting Volunteers
Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors is currently looking for volunteers to take seniors on escorted walks in Picton. There is also a volunteer opportunity for a male who would be willing to visit with an older man who is interested in farming and tools. The time commitment is one hour per week. If you can help please phone 613-476-7493 for more information and start the conversation.

Seniors – need a ride to medical and other appointments?
Prince Edward Community Care offers an escorted transportation program that can maximize your independence with affordable rates, punctuality, personalized service and friendly drivers. Whether you need to travel locally or out of town, this service gets you where you need to go. The volunteer waits with the client while they are in the appointment. Notice of 2-3 days in advance is necessary, same day trips are not available. Call Community Care at 613-476-7493.

Hot Meals on Wheels available from Picton to Carrying Place and everywhere in between
Delivery to the door of a hot nutritious noon-time meal is available Monday, Wednesday and Friday to seniors living in Picton, Bloomfield, Wellington, Consecon, Carrying Place and environs. This means seniors have regular contact with a volunteer to help them stay safe and well in their own home. Rossmore Foot Care Clinic
Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors offers a Foot Care Clinic in Rossmore. Professionally trained registered nurses provide foot care in a clinic setting. The Ameliasburgh Clinic is in addition to the clinics held in Wellington and Picton. Seniors who have trouble trimming their nails or are concerned about foot care can call Prince Edward Community Care for an appointment at 613-476-7493.

Need a Speaker for your group?
Need a speaker for your group – large or small. Prince Edward Community Care will attend your meeting and talk about services for seniors to help them live at home. To make arrangements call 613-476-7493 or email info@communitycareforseniors.org More information at www.communitycareforseniors.org

Help around the home for seniors
Seniors who need help with chores at home, either inside or out, can call Prince Edward Community Care. The agency has carefully screened workers at reasonable rates. Help is available with yard work, lawn maintenance, light and heavy housework, meal preparation, and respite – both during the day and overnight. Volunteer Drivers Needed
Volunteer Drivers escort seniors to medical appointments and essential shopping. If you enjoy driving and meeting people, Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors staff want to discuss with you volunteer opportunities tailored to your availability. www.communitycareforseniors.org

Rural Route Reassurance Program
In partnership with Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, Prince Edward Community Care can arrange for your mail courier en route to keep a watchful eye on your home to help keep you safe. This service is free, offering added safety and security to those living in the country. To participate in this service, call Prince Edward Community Care at 613-476-7493.

Donate used items to Community Care’s Thrift Shop
Good used clothing and linens can be donated at 153 Main Street in Picton, Monday 1pm – 4 pm and Tuesday to Saturday 10am-4pm. You can donate other good used household items too. Prince Edward Community Care’s Thrift Shop helps to reduce, recycle and enables others to reuse. 100% of the proceeds help County seniors live at home. Home Help/ Homemaking
Seniors who need help with laundry, meal preparation, light cleaning and running errands can arrange for carefully screened workers to come to the home for a reasonable fee.
