Shed light on preference for cool or warm street lights

Residents are being asked to shed some light on the new street lamp replacement project.

The County is currently replacing all of its high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights.

The municipality is asking for public feedback as it determines the settings for the new lights. Test sites in Picton and Consecon are set up for residents (see maps below) to compare the “cooler” and “warmer” settings of the LED lights.

The warmer light is a yellowish tint that resembles a traditional incandescent or halogen light. The cooler light leans toward shades of blue and is more like the illumination from a neon light. The warmer lights at the test sites generate 3000 Kelvin degrees (K) while the cooler lights generate 4000K.

The County is installing LED streetlights to reduce costs, save energy, and improve safety. The municipality each year is expected to save approximately $217,000 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions annually by 25 metric tonnes.
