Single lane closures continue on Skyway bridge

Rehabilitation work on the Skyway bridge on Highway 49 for 2018 has been extended and single lane closures will continue until Dec. 21.

Aecon Construction and Materials Limited is working on the $40 million-plus rehabilitation contract which began in August and is expected to be complete by the summer of 2024.

Amberlea Parton, Project Co-ordinator stages that during any single lane closures, priority will be given to emergency vehicles who will be escorted through the work zone as soon as it is safe to do so.
There will also be no lane closures during winter maintenance operations.

The construction work remaining for 2018 includes
rehabilitation work underneath the bridge and electrical work in preparation for the installation of temporary traffic signals in 2019.

The entire cost of the work is to be borne by the provincial government. Built in 1967, the structure exhibits substantial deterioration, particularly to the bridge deck, piers, and steel girders. The structure does not meet current design standards for shoulder width and traffic barriers.

  1. Irene Harris says:

This project will be a waste of $40 million of taxpayers dollars. There should have been a new bridge built which would meet current standards, provide a separated walking and bike lane; lowered to the same height as the Belleville bridge and made to last more than 30 years. This is a $40 million fiasco, built on rotting peers . Maybe our MPP Todd Smith and his government should do something about this, and quickly.
