A special clinic to help young children get the COVID-19 vaccine is set for Thursday, Aug. 11 from 3-8 pm at the Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street).

The clinic will have a special set up to create a less stressful environment for young children getting the vaccine. The Prince Edward Family Health Team also encourages parents to consider applying a numbing cream such as Emla. The cream should be applied prior to arriving at the clinic as it needs time to take effect.

Bookings are available for children six months to four years of age. As well, spaces are available for children between the ages of 5 and 11 and people 12 years and older so that they can get the vaccine at the same time as their younger family members.

No appointments are needed for these shots.

This special clinic aims to help meet the demand for the COVID-19 vaccine among children and youth between 6 months to four years of age; Health Canada approved the COVID-19 vaccine for that age group on July 14. Based on the recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), children aged six months to under five years old will receive the paediatric Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which is a slightly modified, lower dose (half the amount given to children aged six to 11), in a two-dose series at a recommended interval of eight weeks between first and second doses.

At the special clinic on August 11, children between the ages of 5 and 11 will receive the paediatric Pfizer vaccine.

You may book an appointment in advance for this clinic. Go online to book or call the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1.833.943.3900.

Vaccinations are also available at local pharmacies and by appointment, or walk-in depending on vaccine availability, at the clinics in Picton on the following dates:

Tuesday, August 9, 1-7 pm
Tuesday, August 16, 1-7 pm

AUG. 2: COVID-19 high-risk setting cases ticked up slightly over the past week as Hastings Prince Edward Public Health reports 139 new cases, and 133 active, high-risk setting cases. There are 11 people in hospital related to the virus. One requires intensive care.

Tuesday, Aug. 2, 1-7 pm
Tuesday, Aug. 9, 1-7 pm
Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1-7 pm

Walk-ins may be accepted depending on vaccine availability. You may book an appointment in advance for these clinics. Go online to book or call the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1.833.943.3900.

People aged 12 and over who are eligible for their first, second, third, or fourth dose of the vaccine can get the COVID-19 vaccine at these clinics. There are also a limited number of appointments on the provincial vaccine booking portal for both children under five years of age and children aged 5-11 kids.
