During the early 1900s, it was customary for families to come to Glenwood Cemetery in Picton for a special day of remembrance. Flowers and wreaths were placed on the graves of loved ones, prayers were said, and many visitors took a quiet stroll around the park-like grounds.
The special day was reintroduced at Glenwoodas Decoration Day took place Sunday afternoon. Visitors paid their respects to family members and friends by visiting their graves and sharing memories. It was an occasion to recall and celebrate the lives of Glenwood’s residents. Visitors brought flowers to decorate graves and purchased silk flowers which were available on site.
At a special memorial service in the chapel, visitors enjoyed music of guitarist Ken Hudson and gathered for a memorial service conducted by Reverend Audrey Whitney. Soloist Lorain Sine, accompanied by Hudson, played her guitar and sang at the service.
The board and staff of Glenwood Cemetery were pleased with the success of the day and hope to make Decoration day an annual event.
