Judges, volunteers wanted as student scientists prepare for 54th annual competition

QRSTFUp to 200 students from Hastings and Prince Edward County schools are expected to participate in the 54th annual Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair Committee.

Participants at the Saturday, April 6 event at Loyalist College are to exhibit more than 80 projects that demonstrate skills and concepts across a range of engineering and science disciplines.

“The participating student-scientists and student-engineers have conducted scientific research, completed engineering projects and done hours of research and testing under the guidance of their teachers, parents and mentors,” said Scott Berry.

Admission to the science fair is free of charge.  The public viewing time is from 11-3:30 pm.

“Scientific research and the application of knowledge in engineering and technology are critical for the ever-changing scientific landscape of the twenty-first century,” said Berry, one of the organizers. “Without scientific research there can and will be no progress in all scientific fields. The QRSTF committee and our sponsors are providing many awards for our young scientists at the award ceremony at 4pm. We are expecting many well-known presenters from government and local organizations.”

Five students with the top winning projects (Grades 7-12) will advance to Canada-wide Science Fair to be held at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta in May.

Saturday’s event is need of judges and volunteers. People available for April 6 are asked to email Jo-Anne Peckham Co-Chair QRSTF jpeckham@hpedsb.on or  Scott Berry at qrstf@live.com
