Students seek food, not candy, to help ‘scare hunger’ away

WEScareHungerPECI students hope to scare hunger away on Halloween night in the County.

Members of the high school’s ‘Make Poverty History’ team are planning to collect non-perishable food items – instead of candy – when they go door knocking on Halloween night.

“We Scare Hunger is a national campaign organized by the international charity, Free the Children,” said Heather Beach, co-president of the Make Poverty History team with Hannah Sarley. “Youth throughout North America will be participating in We Scare Hunger. A group of students will then transport the donations to the Picton Food Bank the following day. We hope members of the community can be generous in their donations on this busy night. The students will be targeting the neighborhoods surrounding downtown Picton and the high school.”

Throughout the school year, the Make Poverty History team organizes fundraisers, both within the school and in the community. The team’s aim is to raise money for the village of Oloirien in Kenya, Africa. As well as supporting their community, they raise funds to go toward installing a well, proper cleaning facilities and classrooms and providing alternate incomes for the community’s families.

Another upcoming community event by the Make Poverty History Team is the Holiday Dinner, set for Friday, Dec. 6th at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Plans include a silent auction and live music by Katalin Kiss and John McKinney.
