Study to improve County Road 1/Hwy 62 intersection – comments due Oct. 28

Traffic backed up following an accident at the County Road 1 and Hwy 62 intersection this summer – the second within a week.

Residents in the areas of the intersection of County Road 1 (Schoharie Road) and Hwy 62 have received notices delivered by Canada Post of preliminary design and environmental assessment for intersection improvements.

The study is expected to identify short-term and long-term intersection improvements, which may include horizontal and vertical alignments, alternative lane configurations, addition of turning lanes, signalization, additional illumination and a roundabout.

Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson states he’s “relieved that the ministry realizes the intersection deserves scrutiny to avoid more accidents or fatalities,” and he says he continues to “press for construction of a round-a-bout.”

The notice to residents states the study will include reviewing existing conditions, developing and evaluation intersection improvement alternatives and developing environmental protection and mitigation measures.

When this study is complete, a report will be available for public review and comment. Two public information meetings are also to be held.

In the meantime, the public is invited to participate by providing comments and questions by contacting the project team before Oct. 28. Click here to visit website www.Hwy62PEC1.ca

The municipality wrote the Ministry of Transportation in 2020 to seek action to address the intersection, following information received the year before that the ministry saw no problem with it, “so we have our work cut out for us,” noted Ferguson.

“This intersection has come up before with them and from their engineering point of view they do not see any improvements necessary,” Ferguson told council in 2020. “Both traffic signals and a round-a-bout were floated and… they rejected both opportunities. We also suggested to them that widening of that area would facilitate future roundabouts but they rejected that as well. The ministry’s position is there’s no problem here.”

In 2021, MPP Todd Smith brought minister of transportation Caroline Mulroney to meet with PEC OPP detachment commander Staff Sgt. John Hatch and Mayor Ferguson to discuss safety at the intersection. They travelled into the County via a bumpy County Road 49 to meet local officials.

The round-a-bout in Picton at the Hwy 33 and County Road 1 intersection was the first one in the province approved after a lobbying effort by the County “to do something”. It was installed as a pilot and is now being repeated throughout the province.
