Swim team races against the best

swim-Katie-MorrisonThe Belleville Youth Swim Team has been traveling all over Ontario for the past month to compete against some of the best swimmers in Canada.

Three athletes, Katelyn Cairns, Melissa Dingle and Stephanie Cairns attended Eastern Canadian Championships in Windsor in February, while six athletes, Ashley Allaire, Alexander Grant, Mackenzie Latter, Katie Morrison, Nate Shiers-Redhead and Lauren Taylor, represented the area at Ontario Winter Festival (best 13 & under swimmers in the province). Twenty-five BYST swimmers participated at a meet in Ottawa Feb. 22-23 and four athletes, K. Cairns, S. Cairns, Dingle and Grant, raced at Ontario Age Group Championships (best 13 and over swimmers in the province) Feb. 27 to March 2 in London.

At Eastern Canadian Championships in Windsor, Stephanie Cairns placed 10th in the 1500 free, while Katelyn Cairns finished 20th. Melissa Dingle qualified for a final in the 50m bactsroke and finished 17th overall.

Meanwhile, in Brantford at the Ontario Winter Festival, Mackenzie Latter finished 6th in the 50m freestyle and 7th in the 200m freestyle. Alexander Grant cracked the top 10 in both the 400m Individual Medley and the 200m breaststroke. Ashley Allaire came in 12th overall for the 50m butterfly and Nate Shiers-Redhead earned 12th spot in the 50m freestyle. Katie Morrison achieved 13th place in the 100m backstroke. Lauren Taylor was 14th in both the 100m and 200m backstroke.

In Ottawa, Thomas Butler placed top five in all of his races, including a couple first place finishes in the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Ashley Allaire managed four second place finishes in the 200m IM, 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke and 100m freestyle. Alexander Grant won the 50m and 200m breaststroke, while Rylan Miller finished second in the 50m freestyle and 3rd in the 50m backstroke. Athletes with 100 percent best times were Janna Arnold, Lily Charles, Alexander Grant, Meaghan Hannigan and Graeme Smith. Other BYST swimmers with outstanding performances included, Jackson Bonn, John Butler, Natalie Butler, Floranne Carroll, Sydney Chumbley, Nickolas Cinnamon, Josh Lamoureux, Paige Launderville, Reece Monk, Jenna O’Neill, Leah Oster, Elizabeth Peterson, Joseph Rittenhouse, David Savic, Marko Savic, Sophie Simard and Gracey Vanberkel.

Down in London, Stephanie Cairns qualified for two finals, the 200m freestyle and the 400m freestyle; she finished 8th in both. Melissa Dingle qualified for finals in the 200m backstroke and placed 7th overall. Katelyn Cairns had an amazing meet and grabbed 9th overall in the 800m freestyle. Alexander Grant had great showings at his first Ontario Age Group Championships with his best placing being a 9th in the 200m butterfly.

Next up for the BYST is their last home meet of the season April 5-6 at the Templeman Menninga Aquatic Centre. The following weekend kicks off the long course season (racing in 50m pools) n Ottawa. For more information about the team, contact head coach, Brandon Oates, at (613) 661-SWIM (7946).
