Terry Cassidy wins NDP nomination

Terry Cassidy’s name will represent the New Democratic Party on this year’s federal ballots in the new Bay of Quinte Riding.

The 20-year Quinte West city councillor took more than half the votes on the first ballot at the NDP nomination convention Monday, held at Loyalist College. Also running for the post were John McEwen and Jeremy Davis.
The new riding includes Prince Edward County, Quinte West and Belleville, south of the 401. Current MP Daryl Kramp is moving into another riding. Cassidy will run against Conservative candidate Jodie Jenkins and the Liberals’ Neil Ellis this fall.
“I have been a social democrat most of my life and I am both thrilled and honoured to be part of the ‘Orange Wave’ that began four years ago in Quebec and took over Alberta just a few weeks ago,” said Cassidy. “It is clearly time for a real change. We all deserve a Canada that is hopeful, not full of fear, and a country that respects seniors, veterans and working families.”
He has been executive director of Community Partners for Success for the past 19 years. The not-for-profit organization provides resources for women, children and families through four resource centres and three child care sites.
The NDP under Tom Mulcair, he says, will bring back a decent, more human Canada.
“Many more of us can see every day that a corrupt and useless senate and the pathetic ‘fear of terror’ based Bill C51 are part of a continuing list of examples of a bankrupt government,” he said. “Only an arrogant government could try to convince us that after running several years of deficits and selling off assets cheaply to balance the books that they are good fiscal managers.
“The NDP, in contrast, have people-driven policies that will help small businesses, provide affordable child care, tax the wealthy progressively, get rid of the senate and reform the electoral system. I believe most of us are fed up with a Canada that is no longer a peace keeper and has lost all credibility on dealing with climate and environmental issues.
Cassidy was raised in Hamilton and earned his BA and BSW at McMaster University. He is married to Joanne Belanger and they have seven adult children and six grandchildren.

Whew ! That’s a relief Emily ! BUT, democracy is not what governments do. Democracy is what people do. It’s up to all of us to fix our broken western governments. I’m sensing (from all that I read and hear) that there is a desire to fix our governments.
Only serious to the point of how I see it, not that I agree with it. The politicians knowing what is best for us was satire.

Relentless! I think you know that most politicians and their parties purpose is to gain power and maintain power. They sell it as providing common good for the population. That good may not be what the people desire but the politicians know what is best for us.
If Mr. Jenkins happens to read this I’d like to ask him “what principles will you follow when making tough decisions on our behalf? Are those principles consistent with the purpose of government. What is that purpose?”
