Thrills and very few spills at Bloomfield Soapbox Derby

Eighteen children raced soapboxes for fun and prizes in Bloomfield’s annual Blow Out Summer Party – (formerly Breakaway) last Saturday on Mill Street. There were few spills at this year’s event, but volunteers from St. John Ambulance were on scene with band-aids and reassurances.
The day also featured family games, including the Extreme Climbing Wall and food concessions at the park. Entertainment and an old-fashioned Street Dance featuring music from “The Shadows” ended the day.

The Ameliasburgh Ward 4, Recreation Committee partnering with (CARA) the Consecon and Area Ratepayers Association Inc will host its first Soap Box Derby Saturday, July 30th on the Mill Street hill in Consecon at 2 pm. Free registration begins at 1 pm in Consecon Centennial Park.

The Soap Box Derby is open to both girls and boys ages five through 12. Competitors will be divided into two age categories, 5– 8 years and 9– 12 years. Competitors will make individual runs down the hill for best times, (not racing against each other head to head).

Fastest overall time in each category will determine the age group winner. Helmets are mandatory for all competitors and all Soap Box cars must have both a steering and a braking mechanism installed, otherwise the cars will be considered ineligible to compete in the event.

Free design plans are available for anyone wishing to build their own Soap Box car, but extra Soap Box cars will be available for any child wanting to take part in the event.

All safety precautions will be in place and St. John Ambulance will be in attendance during the event.
