Active Living Programs for seniors 60+ are available five days/week through the Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors. Also on offer is  online events each month including fitness and arts classes along with socials.

The Active Living Programs (ALP) offered include fitness, social and recreational activities both online and close to where seniors live. Membership in ALP is available to seniors 60+ for $25/year/person. Membership benefits include: full access to all programs and events (some programs may have additional fees); meet new friends; discover a new hobby, skill or talent; receive monthly updates of programs via email or a phone call for people without email. Office and Thrift Shop closed on Labour Day  – Sept. 1st
The Prince Edward Community Care office, and the Thrift Shop will both be closed for Labour Day, Monday Sept. 1st reopening Tuesday, Sept. 2nd. Hot meals on wheels will be delivered.

Stronger U Fitness Training
Join this eight-week fitness bootcamp with Fitness Powers on Tuesdays from 11am to noon beginning Sept. 2 at the Picton Town Hall. The cost is $45 for the seven-week series for Active Living Program members age 60+.

In Person – Chair Yoga
Breath work, relaxation techniques, gentle stretching and movement.  Most of the class is done seated, however participants should be able to stand assisted with a chair. Fridays 11:15am to noon from Sept. 5 to Oct. 31. Eight-week series for $45 for Active Living Program members.

Minds in Motion
Join the  free 8-week series at the County Seniors’ Centre Mondays 9:30 am to 11:30am from Sept. 8 to Oct. 27. Minds in Motion® is a community-based program designed for individuals living with early to mid-stage Alzheimer disease or other forms of dementia, together with their care partners. The program combines gentle physical activity with engaging mental and social stimulation in a positive, supportive setting.

Line Dancing at the Bloomfield Town Hall
Join Colette and Charlie for a glimpse into line dancing. Dancers move in unison and do not come into physical contact with one another during the dance. Anyone can join a line dance just by knowing a few simple steps. Thursdays from 1-2 pm beginning Sept. 11. $60 for Active Living Program members.

In Person – Better Balance
This class offers exercises, stretches and strengthening techniques to improve balance, focus and awareness of your body in space. Ability to stand and walk with or without assistance is required. Mondays from noon to 12:45pm Sept. 15 to Nov. 10. $45 for the eight-week session for Active Living Program members.

VON SMART exercise program 12-week series
Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30am at the County Seniors’ Centre beginning Sept. 17. Free education and education program for seniors aimed at falls prevention.

Roadmap to Aging Alone Successfully
Join in at the County Seniors’ Centre for a free six-part series to create your roadmap for aging successfully alone on Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4pm beginning Sept. 17. A roadmap for solo seniors aging involves proactive planning to ensure a fulfilling and secure future. Key strategies include building a strong support network, making informed decisions about living arrangements, and addressing potential health and financial needs. Tai Chi classes – beginner and continuation classes
The County Seniors’ Centre will be offering beginner and continuing Tai Chi from Sept. 30 to Dec. 16. The cost is $12 for Active Living Program members.

Curbside pick-up meal Thursday, Sept. 18 – pick-up at Elks Lodge, 21 Elk Street, Picton
Prince Edward Community Care holds monthly curbside pick-up meals. This event is on Thursday, Sept. 18. Kelly Bannister is preparing a scrumptious meal of roast pork, fresh roasted potatoes, fresh vegetables, soup, salad, bun and dessert. The cost is $20 per meal. Meals will be packaged hot and ready to be picked up at noon at the Elks Lodge. To order call 613-476-7493. Delivery can be arranged for seniors who require it. Orders will be taken until 4:30pm on Sept. 15.

Upcoming Webinars with Community Care
Join the County Seniors’ Centre for a series of informative webinars this September — designed to help older adults stay informed, engaged, and living well at home. Upcoming webinars include Humus and Humour – backyard composting with naturalist Terry Sprague on Wednesday, Sept. 2; join us Tuesday, Sept. 16 for an in-person presentation to learn about the expanding scope of practice of community pharmacists and the newly authorized pharmacist prescribing for minor ailments and available clinical services at community pharmacies with Karl Sitarski, Pharmacist and owner of County Drugstore in Picton. Alzheimer Society First Link Program is a referral program designed to help newly diagnosed people with dementia and their families get the help they need as soon as possible. Wii Bowling League – every Monday
Organize your own team of four or we can place you into a team to compete for the high scores in our five-week Wii Bowling League on Monday afternoons from 1 to 2pm beginning July 7. Wii bowling offers a fun way to engage in social and physical activity regardless of your experience with bowling.  While not as strenuous as real bowling, and you can bowl sitting or standing, Wii bowling still involves some physical movement, making it a fun way to get active and you just might get to take home the trophy. Meet and mingle with local knitters – every Wednesday 
Knitters and crocheters of all skill levels are welcome to connect with a community of like-minded individuals and celebrate the joy of yarn. Wednesdays from 1 to 2 pm at the County Seniors’ Centre, 74 King Street in Picton. Friday Morning Social Coffee – every Friday

Volunteers needed to deliver Meals on Wheels in Wellington

Volunteer Drivers needed
Prince Edward Community Care is seeking volunteer drivers for the escorted transportation program with availability of 2-3 hours a week to escort clients to medical appointments or for essential shopping trips. This volunteer opportunity is wonderful for those looking to meet new people in the community, and a chance to have a conversation along the way. Drivers are desperately needed for this essential program. Volunteers are contacted by agency staff 2-3 days in advance of a drive as same-day rides are not provided. Volunteers Needed at Thrift Shop – particularly for Saturdays
Prince Edward Community Care needs volunteers to help in the Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street in Picton. Ontario Energy Support Program assistance

Do you struggle with your hydro bill?  The Ontario Energy Support Program (OESP) is a program that can provide help for eligible low-income seniors.  An eligible household ($28,000 or less for one person or $28,001 – $39,000 for a two person household) can receive between $35-$75 monthly credits on their hydro bill.  Staff at Prince Edward Community Care can answer questions for seniors 60+ and help submit the OESP application.  Seniors who have received Renewal and Information letters from OESP, can arrange for Community Care staff to help facilitate this renewal process.  Please call 613-476-7493 or go to www.OntarioElectricitySupport.ca for more information.

Prince Edward Community Care’s Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street accepting donations
The Thrift Shop accepts donations during regular hours of Mondays 1-4pm and Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm. Shoppers will find a full line of clothing for the whole family including shoes and accessories as well as furniture, housewares, dishes, books, sports equipment, linens, toys and much more. Seniors … borrow a tablet to get involved with online programming
Prince Edward Community Care and the PEC Library partner to make tablets available for seniors to participate in online programming. Training and support for seniors is provided by Libraries of PEC. Foot Care Clinics accepting new clients
Prince Edward Community Care operates Foot Care Clinics in Picton, Wellington and the newly re-opened Rossmore location. Infection control protocols for clients and staff are closely followed. Rides to medical appointments
Prince Edward Community Care offers an escorted transportation program that helps to maximize the independence of seniors with friendly volunteer drivers who closely follow all pandemic safety protocols to keep everyone safe.  This program provides rides for seniors 60+ to medical appointments wherever they need to go including local or to destinations further away.  Rides for essential shopping are also provided.  The fee is reasonable for the clients and is based on .50/km.  The volunteer waits with the client while they are in the appointment.  Volunteer drivers are needed with a particular focus on providing local rides for seniors in Picton.  Volunteers are contacted 2-3 days in advance of a drive as same-day drives are not provided.  Call 613-476-7493 to start the conversation about volunteering.

Groceries, medicines, & library books can be delivered
For seniors 60+ who have an assessed need, Community Care volunteers will pick up and deliver groceries, medicines, library books and other essentials. To arrange for an intake with a staff member call Prince Edward Community Care at 613-476-7493.

Delivery to the door of nutritious frozen meals for seniors
This program is for all seniors 60+. Delivery of frozen meals can make it easier on those days when meal preparation is difficult. These frozen meals are low sodium, high quality and tasty. They can be heated in a microwave or conventional oven. Prince Edward Community Care offers frozen meals to seniors 60+ who live anywhere in Prince Edward County. Hot Meals on Wheels – available five days/week
This program has been operating in Prince Edward County for over 40 years and is open to any senior 60+ who needs support. Delivery to the door of a hot nutritious noon-time meal. Now available up to five days/week anywhere in Prince Edward County. Receiving a hot meal at the door means seniors have a regular check-in to help them stay safe and well in their own home. All pandemic safety protocols are in place. Meals are prepared in fully inspected kitchens by professional food service staff. Help around the home for seniors – Home Maintenance
Seniors who need help with outside work can call Prince Edward Community Care. The agency has carefully screened workers at reasonable rates. Help is available for outdoor work such as fall clean up, and snow shovelling. Pandemic safety protocols are in place. Telephone Reassurance Program
Prince Edward Community Care has supportive volunteers that can offer companionship, encouragement and warm friendly conversation to seniors to just chat, to help with the uncertainty of the pandemic, provide reassurance, and to help keep people safe. This free program is available through a partnership with Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Prince Edward Community Care can arrange for your mail courier en route to keep a watchful eye on your home to help keep you safe. House cleaning for seniors
