Two day heat wave to feel like 40C or more

Environment Canada and Hastings Prince Edward Public Health have issued a two-day heat warning beginning Sunday.

A hot and humid airmass is expected to move into southern Ontario Sunday and remain in place through Monday. Daytime maximum values of 31 degrees or higher are expected on both Sunday and Monday with humidex values near 40.

Overnight minimum temperatures are expected to fall to near 20 degrees, providing little relief from the heat.

The Sandbanks’ Dunes, Outlet and Lakeshore beach day use areas reached capacity early Saturday and Sunday – closed for a few hours early afternoon. Visitors were asked to enjoy other areas in the County until late afternoon.

The Prince Edward Community Centre and the Wellington & District Community Centre have water bottle filling stations and will be open as cooling stations.

The Prince Edward Community Centre (375 Picton Main Street) will be open Sunday, August 5 and Monday, August 6 between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm.

The Wellington & District Community Centre (111 Belleville Street) will be open Sunday, August 5, and Monday, August 6 between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm.
The splash pad located in the Picton Fairgrounds and public beaches are also good places to cool off during the heat warning.

A colder front is expected to to move through the area Tuesday bringing an end to the extreme heat.

Heat puts everybody at risk of heat illnesses, but the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include:
dizziness, headache or fainting;
nausea or vomiting;
rapid breathing and heartbeat;
extreme thirst; and
decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.

If you experience any of these symptoms during a heat event, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

Heat illnesses are preventable. During extreme heat, the most important thing is to keep cool and hydrated.

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health recommends taking the following actions:
stay well hydrated, drink before feeling thirsty (plain water is best);
stay in an air-conditioned place (home, shopping mall, recreational facilities);
avoid sun exposure (stay in the shade, wear SPF30+ sunscreen, a wide brimmed hat, UVA & UVB protective sunglasses, and loose-fitting long shirts and pants);
take cool showers or baths;
block the sun out by closing awnings, curtains or blinds during the day;
reschedule strenuous outdoor activities or plan them for cooler times of the day; and
never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle or direct sunlight.

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health encourages people to visit neighbours, friends, and older family members frequently, especially those at higher risk, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.
