‘Until we do something about bullying, nothing is going to change’

“You gotta stand up and stand by, but whatever you do, don’t be a bystander” – Anti-bullying message delivered by Randy, PECI Grade 11 drama student.

PECI’s Grade 11 drama students helped raise awareness of bullying-related issues with “collective creation” skits presented to County Grades 7 and 8 students and the high school’s Grades 9 and 10 students.
Drama teacher Matt Sheehan commanded full attention of the public school audience when he told the students the bullying topic hits home for him as he was both a victim and victimizer when he was in school.
“But bullying extends beyond the school to the workplace and all areas in society affecting all ages,” he continued. “Until all of us decide to do something about it on a daily basis, nothing is going to change.”
Over the past three weeks, the drama students wrote and rehearsed presentations. The skits focused on intervention, dispute resolution and peer support.
At the end of the performance, they sat on the stage to answer questions from the audience.
Responding to a question about the differences between males and females who bully, one student answered that males tend to be more physical, females more verbal.
“I disagree,” another student piped up. “Bullying is physical and verbal in both males and females and there’s no difference. It’s all still bullying.”
There was also discussion about whether bullying was more prevalent, or equal, in public schools and high school.
Nearly half of the drama students admitted to being being bullied, or have bullied others over their school years.
“I was bullied a lot,” admitted one drama class student. “By Grade 7 I became very depressed, but I got help from my teacher. You can always get help from your teachers, and your parents.”
PECI joined school communities throughout Ontario hosting activities during Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week (Nov. 14-18).
The Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board partnered with local police services, parent and student groups, Loyalist College and several community agencies to plan activities with the slogan for the local campaign “Be Kind to Me.”
