Visitors interact with rural history at Fall Heritage Day

Larry Everall’s farm was bustling with visitors Sunday afternoon during the 26th annual Fall Heritage Day.

Antique plows and wagons showed true grit despite their age. Onlookers watched as large draft horses pulled the plows up and down the field. Wagon rides were circling constantly as well as an ever changing parade of antique horse-drawn farm implements. Flywheels stunned young physics-enthusiasts who were eager to learn about the early technology from older generations. Antique cars and tractors were also on display. The musical whizzes and bangs of working tractor engines provided a beat for observers before the band began to play.

Everall introduced visitors to Benny, a large Belgian Draft stallion weighing in around a metric ton and standing well over six feet at his withers. In the barn, and in the fields, Everall seems to control thousands of pounds of horse with the gentle ease of a man taking his collie for a stroll. In reference to large Benny, he remarks: “He has his space and I have mine. If someone crosses the line, we’ll have a discussion.” He adds that even the large stallion is well-tempered enough to drive alongside mares.

Horses, ponies, and even a goat seemed happy to have the company and delighted visitors by nickering to each other back and forth across the fields. Music played and refreshments were served while visitors enjoyed an afternoon of interacting with rural history.
