930 pounds.

That’s how much garbage that almost 70 people collected throughout the south shore of Prince Edward County one sunny September morning in 2021.

For World Clean Up Day 2022, South Shore Joint Initiative (SSJI) is once again inviting volunteers of all ages to help Clean Up the County’s south shore.

Everyone is invited to joint the charity at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 to clean up Ostrander Point Crown Land Block and Point Petre Provincial Wildlife Area.

“I found multiple tires, a sheet of plywood, a huge green tarp and several dropcloths,” said Braydon Scully, clean up 2021 volunteer. “It was quite shocking to see such large items discarded on the south shore.”

The County of Prince Edward operates seven landfill and transfer station sites. With the exception of the Picton site, six locations – Ameliasburgh, Hallowell, Hillier, Sophiasburgh, South Marysburgh and Wellington – all accept tires up to 22” with the rims removed free of charge, according to thecounty.ca website.

There is no cost for non-contaminated scrap metal and blue box materials at all sites, as well, some sites accept lumber construction waste free of charge. A complete list of items that can be recycled or disposed of can be found by searching “garbage and recycling” on the website.

Participants in this year’s clean up are invited to choose a road to walk, or to drive along, to collect the summer’s accumulation of waste.

“Our annual clean up helps to make our south shore safer and more pleasant for all the creatures and humans that use and enjoy the wilderness,” said John Hirsch, president, South Shore Joint Initiative. “We are grateful to the Elizabeth Crombie Real Estate Team for sponsoring this event and to The Vic Café for donating $10 vouchers for all participants.”

Volunteers can pick up garbage bags at either the corner of Army Reserve Road and County Road 24 or where Helmer and Babylon Roads intersect. All collections will be delivered to a big bin at the corner of Helmer and Babylon.

“We realize that Sept. 17 is going to be a busy day,” said Cheryl Anderson, vice-president and coordinator of the clean up. “We hope everyone will come out early and help clean up before continuing on to the Milford Fall Fair.”
