Hospital auxiliary volunteers enrich lives

Volunteers with the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary not only help enrich patients’ quality of life during their stay in hospital, they are also involved with community programs and fundraising activities. And if you have a few hours each month to help out, you’re welcome to assist them.
The auxiliary held a Volunteer Drive in the board room at the Picton hospital Wednesday but you are welcome to step forward at any time.
“Volunteers are needed in the Coffee Shop, at the Coffee Cart and at the Second Time Around Shop to maintain service and for fund raising,” says the auxiliary’s Barbara Fairbairn. “I would like to invite any citizen of the County who could donate three or four hours of their time once a month to attend this meeting.
“The auxiliary is a well-known community organization in The County,” says Fairbairn. “With a membership of approximately 250 active volunteers who donate their time.”
The Auxiliary also provides community service through assistance at blood donor clinics and awards six bursaries of $1,000 each year to three high school graduates and three mature students.
“In 2009 the Auxiliary donated $ 35,000 to the PECMH Foundation and $50,000 to The Imagine Campaign for special equipment for the Belleville, Trenton and Picton hospitals, in addition to direct purchases for Picton hospital.
The volunteer services offered by the Auxiliary at Prince Edward County Memorial include:
In the hospital:  Coffee Cart, Dialysis Clinic, Landscaping, Library Cart (books, magazines, puzzles offered for use of patients) and Patient Support.
In the Community: Auxiliary Board, Blood Donor Clinics, Meals on Wheels, Student Awards, Fundraising, Coffee Shop, Marathon Bridge, Remembrance Fund, Second Time Around Shop, special events (trips, tours and speciality sales) and Tag Day.
The auxiliary’s next big project is the annual Festival of Trees Nov. 26, 27 and 28 at the Crystal Palace and Community Centre at the Picton fairgrounds. Admission is free of charge. Browers will enjoy the craft and bake sale, refreshments and browsing and buying delightful Christmas trees donated and decorated by community-minded citizens and businesses.
If you wish to participate by decorating a tree, contact Joyce 476-4696 or email joyceandpaul@hotmail.com
