Water levels remain at record high

Quinte Conservation is maintaining its flood warnings as Lake Ontario’s water level remains at a record high for this time of year.

The peak of 75.92 metres was recorded on June 15th. Water levels have been declining and are expected to continue to slowly decline at a rate slightly less than 1 cm per day throughout the summer. The rate of decline will primarily depend on rainfall.

Record high inflows from Lake Erie are expected to cause Lake Ontario’s water level to remain at seasonal highs for at least the next several weeks.

“Lake Ontario’s outflows were increased to 10,400 cubic metres per second in early June. This is equivalent to the record high outflows recorded from June 14 – August 7, 2017,” said Christine Phillibert, Water Resources Manager. “High outflows from Lake Ontario are expected to help provide some relief to shoreline residents while still considering the effects on the St. Lawrence.”

Phillibert notes that residents concerned that their shoreline well or septic has been compromised, should contact their local health unit.

Staff will continue to monitor conditions and will provide an update if forecasts and conditions change. She expects this message will be in effect through to the end of September.

Quinte Conservation is a community-based environmental protection agency serving 18 municipalities in the watersheds of the Moira, Napanee and Salmon Rivers and Prince Edward County.

Be careful what you ask for, they have closed the right of way at Kleinsteuber rd. cnty 12 refusing access to water to farmers for cows. They claim they are protecting the property due to flood damage but it’s no different than it ever was.

I check out the water level at the Northport boat launch, weekly. From what I can tell, the water level has not dropped much at all over these past few months. My real concern is that the permanent pier (as opposed to the mobile dock) is in very bad shape – about to collapse. I too often see people fishing from it – I don;t think they know how weak that structure is. I know that council put aside money to repair it this year, but I doubt that this will happen now due to the high water level. I think that both signage and a total blocking off of that pier needs to take place – for safety.
