Weekend snowfall perfect timing for Harbourfest fun

A mild winter melted plans for skating, but Picton Harbourfest organizers were thrilled to see the snow fall for Sunday’s family event on the grounds at the Picton Harbour.
The Picton Recreation Committee teamed up this year with the new Come Alive Outside program to provide fun for youngsters – including ball hockey, Frisbee games, sledding, ice and snow art and horse-drawn carriage rides.

“We’re really excited about how many people came down since we were supposed to have it on the ice,” said Sarah Walker, Come Alive Outside program director. “Friday morning the firefighters tested the ice and said no go so we did some scrambling and figured out what we could do.
“Terry’s Snow Removal trucked down three dump trucks full of snow to help us get the fort made. We have a lot of volunteers, so this morning we were shovelling the fort out and clearing the rink for ball hockey.”
The Come Alive Outside program promotes healthy, active living outdoors all year long.
“We host events to create awareness and build opportunities for people to get outside with their families. Our first big event was held on Canada Day last year. This spring we will be building a two kilometre trail connecting the fairgrounds, soccer fields and high school with exercise equipment all along it. Wentworth Landscaping is the go ahead team on this. Scott Wentworth, as director, saw this idea in the States and applied it here. It’s very exciting.”
