A $93,000 project is helping to improve accessibility to a building that houses services to help seniors remain connected to their community.

The Community Care for Seniors Association has been working to make its entrances at 74 King St,, Picton fully accessible, and safe, for seniors, their caregivers and the public. The site also houses VON Canada, which hosts the VON Adult Day Program in the south end of the building.

“At the conclusion of this project, the building will be fully accessible for all people, and especially for the hundreds of seniors and their caregivers who seek services and support here so that they can remain connected to their community,” said Debbie MacDonald Moynes, executive director with the Community Care for Seniors. “The services offered by the two agencies here empower seniors to remain living in the community with confidence, and independence.”

The association is requesting council approve the designation of two parking spaces in the Market Lane lot as accessible parking spots near the association’s location.

Margaret Werkhoven, President and Chair of the Community Care for Seniors Board, and Barbara Proctor, director, plan to address the Committee of the Whole about the parking, on Thursday.

An $80,000 grant from the Parrott Foundation is helping to fund the project to provide safe access. The agencies are fundraising to meet the balance required for the $93,000 project.

The walkway along the side of the building has been renovated to make it level and wide enough for walkers and mobility devices so that seniors parking in the nearby municipal lot can easily access any entrance. A walkway to the municipal lot would also be included to help seniors get to the grounds of the building without climbing over concrete blocks.

The exterior door to the Adult Day Program was originally at the south end with a steep ramp that was not usable. The door to Community Care, at the north end, was also not accessible.

A covered ramp has also been constructed to provide access for seniors who use walkers, wheelchairs and canes. Automatic doors are to be installed at both entrances.

“By being located together, all staff of both agencies can collaborate and offer a streamlined basket of services in an integrated, and efficient manner,” said Moynes.

She notes the project also includes an outdoor sitting area to be built under a mature tree already on the property, for seniors to rest and interact in comfortable surroundings. There are also plans for a small patio area with space for scooter parking.

The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association offers services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation to medical appointments, noon-time dinners for seniors, foot care, help with forms (including Income Tax), respite, home maintenance, rural route reassurance and telephone reassurance programs.

The agency is partly funded by the Ministry of Health & Long-Term Care through the Local Health Integration Network and supported by donations and community fundraising efforts, such as Community Care’s Thrift Shop at 153 Main Street.

The Community Care office is located at 74 King Street in Picton. For more information call Community Care at 613-476-7493 or www.communitycareforseniors.org
