World Rowing Tour passes through the Bay of Quinte region

The Ontario Adventure Rowing Association and World Rowing are welcoming 51 international rowers from 12 countries to the Bay of Quinte region from Sept. 11 to 13 for the World Rowing Tour 2022: Bays and Islands.

This is the third tour hosted in Canada and the first one to take place in South Eastern Ontario.

On the morning of Sunday, Sept. 11, 10 coastal rowing boats, designed for rougher water conditions, are to set off from Weller’s Bay. These boats will make their way through the Bay of Quinte to the United Empire Loyalist Heritage Centre and Park in Adolphustown over the next three days, rowing an average of 34 km per day.

The rowers will then move their base from Belleville to Kingston to carry on with the 1000 Islands leg of the tour.

“We look forward to sharing the beauty of the Bay of Quinte with our international guests and to showcasing this area as an excellent place for water-based recreation,” said Christian Jaehn-Kreibaum, president of the Trenton Rowing & Paddling Club and co-organizer of the World Rowing Tour.

The fleet of coastal boats will travel from Weller’s Bay to Brighton, then along the Murray Canal to the Bay of Quinte where they will stop at the Trenton Rowing and Paddling Club.

The next day they will continue their journey with a stop in Belleville before heading down to Picton, then to Adolphustown on their third day in the region before continuing on to the next leg of their journey.

The tour’s Peter Jepson notes there won’t be a stop in Picton, but there other places to see the rowers.

“I would have liked the route to include Picton, but there is nowhere to land this type of boat (10 of them!) there. The nearest stops are on the other side of the ferry, at Old Hay Bay Church (Tuesday lunchtime) and the UEL centre (Tuesday afternoon). Between those two points, the route will stay close to the Adolphustown shore. The two stops in the County are Edward Drive Boat Launch in Consecon, the starting point, 9 am tomorrow Sunday, and County Shores (on Route 15), the finishing point on Monday.”

Those who would like to see the coastal boats and the international rowers will have three great opportunities to see them:
● At the Gosport Marina at the foot of Baldwin Street in Brighton on Sunday: The tour is to arrive there between 11:30 a.m. and noon. They will leave again for the afternoon row through the Murray Canal, at 2 p.m.
● As they arrive in Trenton on Sunday: The fleet is to enter the Trent River soon after 4
p.m. and they, along with the Trenton Rowing and Paddling Club members who will accompany them up the river can be watched from Trent Port Marina or Centennial Park. They will be disembarking at the Boat Launch in Riverside Park around 4:30 p.m., and then resting at TRPC in Riverside Park, Ontario Street, Trenton.
● As they arrive in Belleville on Monday: They will pass Zwick’s Park around noon, and can then be seen from anywhere along the Bayshore Trail. The tour will arrive at the Quinte Rowing Club, at the east end of Keegan Parkway and the Bayshore Trail, by 12:30 p.m. They can also be watched as they are leaving QRC at 2 p.m.

The Quinte Watersports Fair is also taking place in conjunction with the World Rowing Tour to provide an opportunity for those who are interested in non-motorized watersports to learn about different equipment and local clubs. The all-ages event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on
Sept. 10 in West Zwick’s Park and admission is free.
