The HUB Child and Family Centre outdoor playgroup members enjoyed a sunny but chilly morning at Macaulay Mountain. Participants built a fire, then roasted apple pieces for a snack while warming up. A hike around the pond wrapped up the morning’s activities in nature.

Funds raised on a stormy winter evening will help families shed the burden of caregiving and instead, laugh and cry with loved ones during their final days. More than 150 people supported silent and live auctions, dined and danced the evening away Saturday at the Wellington Community Centre in support of end-of-life care given at no charge to clients at the three-bed residential hospice at 40 Downes Ave., in Picton. – Sharon Harrison photo

Plans for Prince Edward County’s new hospital are moving forward with the announcement of a $500,000 grant to help Quinte Health Care with early planning stages. While the grant does not mean approval to build, Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Eric Hoskins told several dozen people attending a meeting at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital that “this hospital will be built”. The saying ‘there are plenty of fish in the sea’ wasn’t true for most of Saturday afternoon for more than 50 anglers who fished form more than an hour to hook the first fish in the ninth annual Merland Park Ice Fishing Derby. A site plan agreement for changes to Prince Edward Collegiate Institute landed on the horseshoe at Shire Hall in preparation for the high school to become a Kindergarten to Grade 12 school in the fall. The development includes expansions to the crescent access along the front of the high school for better bus flow off Barker Street, additional parking and playground equipment.

Several families enjoyed sunset at Sandbanks Provincial Park Sunday with a walk along the beach and along the trails.

A bustling Wellington and District Community Centre saw a full day of free and fun activities on Family Day holiday Monday. They’ve stepped into the future, but they’re still dinosaurs. Visitors at Macaulay Heritage Park Church in Picton learned about how the Triassic came to Trenton during a special Flashback February Heritage Week presentation. Peter May, Founder and President of Research Casting International (RCI), headquartered in Trenton, spoke about how his company restores and reproduces dinosaur bones. The Trenton facility is one of the world’s biggest and was the go-to spot when movie director Steven Spielberg needed skeletons for his Jurassic Park movie. – Sharon Harrison photo

PECI drama students presented ‘The Trouble with Gingerbread – A Hansel and Gretel Story – a family-friendly musical romp through the County a la Hansel and Gretel. Directed by drama teacher Matthew Sheahan, the show was a family friendly romp through the town of Bloomington in the County of Prince Eddy. Twins Hansel and Gretel, along with their trusty dog Wellington, try to reverse the family curse placed on their family by the evil witch Grigella, while Gretel simultaneously tries to avoid the son of the village winemaker, Karlo Huff the Third, and get the Golden Rooster Bob, who will help save the farm.
