York Street may be next Habitat build site

By Ross Lees
Prince Edward County Council’s committee of the whole meeting identified 7 York Street as a property of interest for Habitat for Humanity and took the first steps Thursday to convey the property to the organization.
Councillor Bev Campbell noted council had been advised by the organization the property was suitable for their use.
“They do an amazing job and there is no need for the property for ourselves,” she said.
Council must now declare the land surplus, grant the land to Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity for the sum of $2 for the purpose of building a Habitat for Humanity home which is subject to the organization being responsible for all fees and charges related to the conveyance and development of the property.
Once the motion is officially passed at a council meeting, staff will be directed to provide public notice of the intention to pass the bylaw granting the land to Habitat for Humanity in accordance with the County’s sale of land bylaw.
Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization.
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing.
Prince Edward-Hastings HFH, established in 1995, has built eight homes to date. The latest four were completed in early 2005, two in Belleville and two in Picton. Two Chapters were formed, one in Trenton (Quinte West) in 2002, and one in Prince Edward County in 2003. The Trenton Chapter has built one home and the Prince Edward Chapter, two.
A first for the Prince Edward Hastings affiliate and for Habitat Canada, the 2009 project featured a straw bale construction design, on Barker Street, Picton. Exterior walls were insulated with locally cut and baled straw to provide exceptional insulation value to the home. Organized and built by the folks at Bloomfield’s Bethany Christian Reformed Church with help from Camel’s Back Straw Bale Construction, the Snider family moved into their spacious new home in time for Christmas.
