Hot dog! A nice contribution to 4H

Buddha Dog fans and friends who attempted a Guinness World Record – one hotdog at a time at Picton’s Canada Day celebrations – also supported local agriculture. Funds raised from each $5 registration collected $600 for the Prince Edward County 4H Club.
The 4H Club has a long association with the youth of Prince Edward County providing opportunities for rural youth to learn about the world around them while instilling leadership skills, self-confidence and providing a good place to make friends.
“We currently have 94 members in the county,” said Karen Paszternak, Director of the 4H for Prince Edward County. “It is not just for farm kids, anyone from 10 to 19 years can join.”
The 4H is running 16 different projects for its members in the county including clubs for livestock, cooking and sports, just to name a few. She said the 4H will run a program on just about anything if they can find leaders and parents to run the program.
Replacing their aging milkshake booth is the latest fund-raising project for the County 4H.  So far they have raised nearly $18,000 through various fund-raisers and from generous contributions from the area’s business community and service clubs.
Buddha Dog has taken an active role in contributing to various County causes since its arrival in Picton five years ago.
“Every dollar spent at Buddha Dog stays right here in the county,” said Andrew MacKenzie, co-founder. “Every ingredient is sourced in the county.
“We want our product to be accessible to the young families in the area who are concerned about the quality of the food they eat and where it comes from,” he said. “The local farmer is a hero and we recognize that by supporting them. We are seeing many more businesses taking the same position in the last five years.”
The next event for 4H will be at Breakaway Weekend in Bloomfield July 17. Anyone interested in helping or joining 4H can contact Karen Paszternak at 613-476-1991 or email karenpaszternak@gmail.com
