Canadian shining stars share vocal and visual art – in library fundraiser

Gallery owner David Hatch with Sarah Slean and Kevin Hearn

Two shining stars of the Canadian music scene will show their artistic sides – in music and art – this Saturday in a fundraisier for the Picton Library expansion.

Award-winning musician Kevin Hearn and singer-songwriter Sarah Slean will present an intimate performance at the HatchGallery in Bloomfield. Guests will preview artwork from a new exhibition, which features drawings by Hearn and paintings by Slean while mingling with two shining stars of the Canadian music scene.

Hearn, a well known member of The Barenaked Ladies, has performed with Gord Downie and Lou Reed. According to Sharpe Magazine, “Hearn may be the most important person in Canadian music right now.”

Slean is a Juno nominated performer whose musical style evokes themes of cabaret, pop, and rock, knit together with classical overtones and lyrical poetry. TIME Magazine Canada has listed her as “One of the most compelling acts Canada has to offer.”

The event is set for Saturday, Sept. 21 from 3-5p.m. at the HatchGallery, 8 Stanley St., Bloomfield.

$120 per person. Limited VIP tickets available online at peclibrary.org, and at the door if available. 100 per cent of the proceed benefit the Picton Branch expansion.

A VIP ticket includes a speciality cocktail, provided by Old Salt Cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres by Bloomfield Public House.

Earlier this year, six local galleries united to help raise more than $110,000 to help with the Back the Build hospital project with the newly formed Prince Edward County Art Dealer’s Association (PECADA).

David Hatch, of HatchGallery and a PECADA founding member, notes Hearn’s drawings are populated with wild and whimsical characters inspired from impulsively drawn sketches made during his time on the road in hotel rooms. These drawings have graced the cover of record albums and award-winning children’s books.

Through her artwork, Hatch says Slean creates a fantastical world. Her painterly style is often sparse, inviting viewers to create narratives within her imagery.

“We are very honoured to be hosting this exhibition by two incredibly talented Canadian musicians,” said Hatch. “Not only are both Kevin and Sarah superstars in terms of their respective musical projects, but as it turns out, they are wonderful visual artists.

“When they each offered to perform a few tunes at the opening of their new exhibition at HatchGallery, we were thrilled. Further discussions lead us to decide as a group to turn the affair into a fundraiser for the local library expansion in Picton.”
