Integrity Commissioner to investigate email incident between resident and councillor

The Integrity Commissioner will investigate an email incident between a resident and a member of Prince Edward County Council.

Council met in closed session Tuesday night to discuss and receive legal advice as it relates to a personal matter about an identifiable individual and his or her actions related to the Code of Conduct for Members of Council.

Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff, in a statement, said council approved a motion directing the municipality’s Integrity Commissioner Robert Swayze to investigate a complaint from a resident regarding communications the resident received via email from a councillor.

Council anticipates a response from the Integrity Commissioner within 30 days, at which time council will respond to findings and any corrective action recommended.

The statement noted that due to the confidential nature of the personal matter, the municipality has no further comment at this time.

How many times has this action been taken in PEC? The fact that it has been done is a step in the right direction. I see this as a warning shot across the bow. Proper behavior is required by ALL municipal councillors. If there were not an actionable issue it would never gotten as far as it has. Maybe two people do not like each other, but that is not grounds for either improper behavior or investigation by the Integrity Commissioner. Be thankful we have one. This benefits the community as a whole.

Seems to be pretty much common knowledge on the street. Very difficult to keep these things under wraps.

  3. Chris Keen says:

Since we know nothing about the “email incident” idle speculation is rather pointless, isn’t it?

  4. Steve Staniek says:

It may sound trivial to those who do not deal with government on serious issues, but those of us who challenge bad governance regularly, have experienced government malfeasance at all levels in PEC. I have complained repeatedly at my own peril, about bad service from elected officials who refuse to serve, right here on this discussion website, and every media outlet that supports good governance.

  5. Susan says:

This has been back and forth for quite sometime, but a Councilor has to take the higher road.

  6. Fred says:

I think it is a big deal about nothing!

  7. snowman says:

Probably going to cost us taxpayers a whole bunch of money to find out that 2 people don’t really get along very well.
I hope the cost is made public, so that everyone who has to pay for it is well informed .

  8. Whatever says:

    Is anyone curious about this??
