Improvements for rural roads this year were approved by council Tuesday night after reviewing the lowest tender recommendations for more than $1.8 million for 2023 rural rehabilitation and maintenance work. UPDATE: Approved.
Council awarded a $1,177,646.60 surface treatment tender to Miller Paving Limited as well as a $760,842.00 tender for micro surfacing. A $323,029 tender for line painting and pavement marking to Apex Pavement Markings Inc. also needs approval.
The surface treatment tender includes single surface treatment (SST) for roads in good condition or those who have previously received a treatment and micro surfacing which is a preventative maintenance technique used to extend the life of an asphalt roadway. Double surface treatment is for roadways at or near surface failure.
Some road work plans were changed as necessary following a spring inspection of conditions. Four roads were removed from single surface treatment as they have deteriorated beyond what SST can provide – including Georges Road, Gore Road, a portion of Lakeside Drive, Morgan Road, Smokes Point Road and a portion of Station Road. Staff notes mitigation includes continued efforts to find funding and surface conversion to a gravel road for the lower volume roads which have deteriorated beyond surface treatment.
Three roads were moved to this year – including a portion of Long Point road, Salmon Point Road and Wesley Acres Road.
