Library fostering a new generation of talented creatives

Prince Edward County is well-known for being a haven for artists and creatives, and if the recent youth programs at the library are any indication, there’s a new generation of talent coming up soon.
The Secondary After School Social Club (better known as the SASS Club) meets Tuesdays after school at the Picton Branch Library. As a group they decide together the types of activities they would like to take on. Previously the group worked together to adorn a central pillar with fabric and yarn art, and they have a new idea for the new year. They have been focused on transforming that same pillar in the branch into a large tree as part of an innovative art project. Built on a surprising foundation of pool noodles, the project is eye-catching and has been a lot of fun for the group. Any high school age youth interested in getting involved in this or other “SASS” projects are welcome to drop in on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Discover YOUth, the library’s 2SLGBTIQA+ and friends group meets Fridays after school from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Picton Branch Library. The group participates in a wide range of activities (past meetups have included kayaking, baking, and more) as well as creative art projects. In January, the group will be working with artist Danielle Reddick. Danielle is an artist in residence at the County Arts Lab, alongside Colin Green, whose-large scale paintings are a highlight of the library foyer. As part of her residency, Danielle is rebuilding an immersive experience of Pompeii. During their visit, the Discover YOUth group will create cultural artifacts inspired by Pompeii. In June, Danielle worked with the youth to create a chainmail inspired flag for the youth pride parade in Picton.
Youth artists are also welcome to drop in to the Picton Branch on Jan. 15, 22 and 29 after school for an art gathering at the Picton Branch Library. This meet up will be an opportunity to share work and create new pieces for submission to the Roc art show which will be held at Arts on Main opening on Saturday, February 21. Bring your supplies and join other creative youth to make something new at the library.
Youth also make use of the library’s Makerspace, using technology to get creative. Equipment available at the Picton branch includes a 3D printer and 3D scanner, cutting and engraving multitool, digital media lab, film and slide scanner and recording studio. Equipment is available to use free of charge, with a small fee to cover the cost of supplies. The Musical Instrument Lending Library is also popular with youth, with guitars, ukuleles and more available for experimentation and learning.
