Prince Edward OPP’s interim detachment commander has been confirmed in the position on a permanent basis. The detachment announced today Staff Sergeant Jeff MacKinnon’s role, following the retirement of John Hatch, who held the position for about a decade. MacKinnon has served as interim commander since May 2025.
“It is a privilege and an honour to serve as Detachment Commander for Prince Edward County,” said MacKinnon. “Effective policing cannot be achieved in isolation. Meaningful collaboration with community partners is essential to understanding local priorities and addressing what matters most to the people we serve.”
MacKinnon brings nearly three decades of policing experience. A graduate of Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Law, he began a policing career with the OPP in 1995.
His first posting was in Matheson, within the Northeast Region for five years. In November 2000, Mackinnon transferred to the Prince Edward County Detachment, working front-line policing for several years in addition to spending two years in the Crime Unit.
In 2008, MacKinnon was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and transferred to the Bancroft detachment. A further promotion to Staff Sergeant followed in 2018, along with an appointment as Detachment Commander for Bancroft.
