You might know that your public library provides ample access to books, magazines, DVDs and other educational and entertaining materials, but did you know that the public library is also a hub for creativity and creation?

A few of the many available instruments.

The Musical Instrument Lending Library, paired with the Recording Studio at the Picton Branch Library is a great way to jumpstart an interest in creating and performing. Countless instruments from guitars, keyboards, violins, ukuleles and more are available with a membership to the MILL – only $10 for a two-year membership, which covers the cost of small incidental repairs like the occasional broken string. The instruments have almost all been donated by musicians who have moved on or moved up, creating a diverse and unique collection.

If it’s the written word you are interested in creating, writing workshops including an upcoming series led by author Andrew Binks might be the right fit for you. He’ll be joining us at the Bloomfield Branch starting on Sept.16. The cost is $90 for a six-week session and you can reserve your spot at peclibrary.org

Handcrafts are also popular at the library. A long-running group at the Milford Branch meets weekly on Tuesday mornings at 10 am and welcomes new participants to bring their knitting, crocheting or other projects. New this fall, a sock knitting group will start at the Picton Branch Library on Sept. 10 at 10 am and continuing on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. The group promises two hours of uninterrupted knitting time and the opportunity to get to know other crafters.

The library’s meeting rooms are great places for this type of group. If you’re interested in starting your own crafting group – maybe painting, collaging, junk journalling or other idea – you can book a space at no charge and meet up with others interested in the same ideas. Ask at any branch of the library for more information.

The Makerspace at the Picton Branch Library is a lively spot with 3D printers, laser engraver, digital design studio and more available for you to use – no experience required. Most items are free to use with a small cost to cover the materials.
