Apartments heavily damaged in fire at Mary Street

JUNE 10- An overheated power bar in a bedroom is suspected to have caused the fire Saturday at 113 Mary Street.
The apartment complex was evacuated with people from 12 apartments displaced as of Saturday night. Two of the building’s 69 units were destroyed in the blaze. Other units had minor smoke and water damage.
Manlow said a number of appliances were plugged into the power bar and it overheated and along with other combustibles in the area, started the fire.
He is back at the building today following up with social services which has been assisting residents.
JUNE 8 – Fire crews from two halls were called to 113 Mary Street as flames and thick smoke billowed from an apartment on the third floor.
Residents had left the building by the time firefighters arrived on scene. One person was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
Prince Edward County Fire Chief Scott Manlow says the flames were knocked down quickly with two apartments heavily damaged and a few others suffering minor smoke or water damage.
Some residents won’t be allowed to return home until Monday or Tuesday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
