People who drop in to the Picton Branch Library admire the design by architect Brian Clark.
He is a well-known and established architect who has been the recipient of several Prince Edward Home Builders Association awards for projects including the Grange Winery, Manor on Loyalist Parkway, and the Wellington Arena.
He also designed the small expansion to the Picton Branch in 2001, which made space for an elevator, and took on the challenge of connecting the Wellington Branch Library to a small separate building, which created space for the Archives.
His vision for the Picton Branch Library brought expanded spaces, open areas, and a skillful reimagining of a challenging area – a steep hill behind the library. The library now encompasses that space and is a beautiful and well-used three storey building.

Some hardscaping – paving stones and a retaining wall – is in place in the exterior behind the library (above), and the good news is that there is more yet to come in that space.
Clark has chosen a landscape architect Robert Beaudin, who has now presented some exciting plans that will surround the library with easily maintained plantings and spaces to sit and rest. Beaudin has more than 30 years of experience and has a passion for plants. As he says, his focus is on “the role of ornamental and native plants as well as planting design in gardens,” incorporating sustainability concerns in each of his projects.
Visitors will be able to sit outside and read the newspaper, use the WIFI, and more. There will also be a garden area behind the library, accessible from Main Street.
Those who have used the flex space on the lowest level of the library, will have seen a large garage-style door. When the landscaping work is finished, people will be able to have that door open, expanding the space that can be used.
As the noisy hardscaping work comes to an end, it is anticipated that the balcony will also become another popular place for small groups to work and collaborate in the warmer weather. It is accessible from the technology area of the library and has a great view of Macaulay mountain. People will be able to book the balcony space just like the other meeting rooms or drop in and use it anytime during library hours if not in use.
None of these projects would be possible without the support of the community. Countless donors, as well as some special grants, have made this all possible, and we are so grateful.
