The Prince Edward County Kings Greer Excavating Atom BB team won the world’s premier atom and peewee hockey tournment over the holidays.
The Kings competed in the 14th annual Bell Capital Cup Dec. 27- Jan. 1 with more than 400 teams participating. This year’s field was comprised of teams from five different countries, including Canada (three provinces and one territory), China (Hong Kong), Finland, Germany and the United States (nine states).
Coach Dan Davies reports this enormous victory was a team effort with everyone giving their all on each and every shift.
“We were seldom outworked,” he said. “The Kings represented the County tremendously with team spirit, hard work ethic and determination. The outcome truly represents what went into every shift.
The last game was close but our determination to succeed came through. It was a great experience that will last a lifetime. These are accomplishments that can never be taken away.
The Kings outscored their opponents 19-0 in the first five games, and won 3-2 in the final.
“I thought it was a very close game in the final and it could have gone either way,” said Davies. “We outshot our opponents 19-7 in the final but Nic the Brick made a fantastic glove save that sealed the win for us in the third.”
The team also won two skills competitions. The Skating Relay Race winning team was comprised of Thomas Davies, Cameron Pero, Ian Harrison, and Connor Verhoog while the Agility Relay Race winning team was Jasper Gilbert, Cooper Rogers, and Nick Kirby-Palliser.
