Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory volunteer Carolyn Barnes holds two recently-banded male Merlins. They are the first adult Merlins PEPtBO has banded in its 17 years of operation. They are also only the seventh and eighth of the species observed during the fall migration in the Canadian Wildlife Area where PEPtBO is situated, in the southeast end of Prince Edward County at Long Point. PEPtBOs fall season ended Oct. 31 with almost 6,000 birds banded since mid-August, including more than 720 Northern Saw-whet Owls. The overall totals for 2011 are an impressive 12,068 birds representing 119 different species. PEPtBO will open again for the spring season on April 9, 2012.
