Brother and sister shining example of Kids of Steel

Smiles, applause and some tears were shed Sunday as family, friends and spectators witnessed Luc and Sophia Mayfield cross the Kids of Steel triathalon finish line together.
The two were among 230 athletes from all over the province to swim, bike and ride in the eighth annual event at the Prince Edward Fitness and Aquatic Centre.
It was the first time for ‘special needs’ competitor to enter the race. Luc competed in his age 12-13 category, assisting his seven-year-old sister, who was not able to participate on her own.
They swam, biked and ran and though they didn’t have a podium finish, they had “an amazing experience.”
“It was amazing to feel everybody cheer us on,” said Luc at the finish line. “I don’t think I could have done it without everybody’s support. She was smiling the whole time. I think she had a great time.”
“You did great and I’m proud of you,” said Luc’s mom Deanna, as she held Sophia and hugged her boy.
“When he first told me he wanted to compete, I thought he meant by himself. But we weren’t suprised. She loves being with him and they are very close. He told me that he wanted to do something with her because he said, ‘if people don’t know her they treat her differently, so I want her to always be part of our community.'”
