Certain U.S. cauliflower, red and green lettuce products sold across the country including in Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick are being recalled.
The products, produced by Adam Bros. Farming Inc of Santa Maria, California, USA, could be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.
The affected products have been imported by: Courchesne Larose Ltd., Anjou, QC, Dominion Citrus, Toronto, ON; Fresh Taste Produce Limited, Milton, ON; and Fruits et Legumes Gaetan Bono Inc., Montreal, QC.
Consumers, retailers, restaurants and institutions should not sell, use or consume the recalled products described below. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
The cauliflower products are clearly labelled with “Adam Brothers Family Farms” but the lettuce was sold in bulk and is not branded.
The CFIA is urging consumers unsure whether they have affected produce to contact their retailer for more information.
Contaminated produce may not appear or smell contaminated but will still make you sick. If those products are ingested, contamination could lead to symptoms of nausea, vomiting and in more extreme cases, seizures, strokes, permanent kidney damage or even, death.
This recall was triggered by a recall in the US which resulted from an investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 linked to the consumption of romaine lettuce.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is working with the United States Food and Drug Administration, and is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products.
The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace.
