Charges related to $100,000 lottery scam

The Prince Edward County OPP Crime Unit stated today it has laid charges in connection with a lottery scam this summer where a victim lost more than $100,000.
OPP received a report Aug. 21 of a scam involving a fake lottery claim. The victim was advised they had won the lottery.
“After further discussion with the suspect, they convinced the victim to provide money in a variety of forms, resulting in a loss exceeding $100,000,” said Acting Sgt Aaron Miller, east region media co-ordinator. “The suspect is believed to have attended the victim’s house to assist in the transactions.”
Investigators executed a search warrant Sept. 28 and arrested a 39-year-old from Etobicoke. Charges include Criminal harassment – threatening conduct; Theft over $5,000; Fraud over $5,000 and Mischief to computer data.
The individual was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville.
The OPP encourages anyone who has lost money because of a fraud to report it to police at 1-888-310-1122.
