Wellington residents and friends took a chilly plunge into Lake Ontario this New Year’s Day. Participants report their annual dip wasn’t as cold as last year, and due to above seasonal temperatures, the air when coming out of the water also felt warmer than usual. Several noted “it feels really good to do it”.
Done properly, health benefits include pain relief as well as raising adrenaline and dopamine, generating a thrilling feeling of euphoria. Plus, there’s bragging rights.
To avoid the risk of hypothermia, the Canadian Red Cross recommends limiting time spent in the water to two minutes. The organization also recommends wearing socks, water shoes, neoprene surf boots or running shoes to protect your feet and prevent them from sticking to snowy or icy rocks on the shore.
