Community is key to success of County’s libraries

One question we are regularly asked at the library is “How do you do it all?” How do we operate six branches, programs for everyone, book circulation, tech help and all of the myriad other pieces that make up modern library service?

The answer is that we do it with your help – both in donations at peclibrary.org/donate and in volunteer time and enthusiasm.

Storytimes are enhanced by the participation of groups such as the South Shore Joint Initiative, Sandbanks and Quinte Conservation, and children’s books authors. We are grateful to the many community groups that include the library in their event planning, including the Baxter Arts Centre, recreation committees, BIA and BABA and the Ameliasburgh Heritage Hub. This allows the library to continue to be a central hub for all.

In my role looking after communications, outreach and programs for our six branches, every day I’m in touch with people discussing partnerships, opportunities to join us for programming, looking for guest speakers, recommendations and more.

Every person I ask is generous with their time and expertise and it truly helps enhance the service the library is able to provide. A great example is the newly painted door at the Bloomfield Branch. Through the sale of used books, we raised enough funds to have the door repainted. The Friends of the Library suggested we coordinate the colour with a mural in the village painted by Chrissy Poitras of Sparkbox Studio who not only shared the information about the colours she used but even offered to share her leftover paint.

Karole Marois is another artist who has helped this year. If you have visited the Picton Branch will have seen her two works: “Disturbing the Waters” and “New Perspectives”. Both are for sale and proceeds in part will support the library. We’re grateful to all of the artists who have made art available in the library, including Celia Sage, Aiden Hailey, and Andrew Innes.

Through a partnership with Community Care for Seniors, and its incredible team of volunteers, home delivery is available for those who cannot make it out to the library. We also have a team of volunteers who visit nursing and retirement homes, and a few people who deliver to individuals. This helps keep people connected and engaged, and we regularly hear from these patrons what a difference it makes in their lives.

These are just a few examples – I could have written another 10,000 words. How do we do it all? With the support of countless people across Prince Edward County. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to another successful year.

END OF YEAR GIVING
If you are planning for end -of-year giving, please consider the library. You can direct your gift to the branch, collection, or program of your choice and can donate in the name of a loved one, which makes a great holiday gift for the person who has everything. Donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. Find out more at peclibrary.org/donate or contact Barbara Sweet at ceo@peclibrary.org
