Council supports painted Lest We Forget commemorative crosswalks

Canadian Armed Forces commemorative crosswalk painting may come to three locations in the County by next Remembrance Day.
County council showed unanimous support for the motion from councillor Phil St.-Jean Tuesday night, as a way to honour the service of veterans and those who serve in the armed forces.
The idea, he said, came about following numerous conversations about the Canadian Armed Forces commemorative crosswalk photographs in Belleville this year which were widely shared on social media.
He suggests installation of Remembrance Day Lest We Forget crosswalks by the Picton cenotaph, Wellington Main Street, and a consultation with the Consecon Legion Branch to identify the best location there.
He wants to see them in place no later than Nov. 2, 2025 to honour both the Indigenous Veterans Day (Nov. 8) and Remembrance Day Nov. 11.
Exact costs are unknown, but believed to be in the $2,000 per crosswalk area, plus maintenance costs. It was noted application may be cheaper in some neighbouring municipalities which own a machine to do the painting.
The crosswalks, he noted would “look very good on our community. It shows that we care and support all of our veterans, past and present.”
In light of honouring veterans, councillor Janice Maynard added she soon will be pursing support for the restoration of the Old Boys’ Entrance at the Picton Fairgrounds.

Thank you, Council. Well done.
Good on you council… The community has been quite outspoken on social media and on the street. We want to honour our veterans, past and present, and this recognition is a simple way to acknowledge veterans on a daily basis.
