County artists pair with UK writers in 26 Atlantic Crossings project

26-atlantic-crossingThe Prince Edward County Studio Tour has leaped across the Atlantic to collaborate with 26, a unique organization of British writers who seek creative ways to communicate. The result is 26 Atlantic Crossings, an international project linking visual art and the craft of writing.

Twenty-six artists, all members of the 2014 studio tour, have partnered with 26 British writers.  Each artist has created an original work of art, and in response, their writer has produced a sestude (exactly 62 words, 26 in reflection) based on what they see. The project is inspired by 26 Treasures, an exhibit held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where each writer responded to their treasured object in 62 words.

The Canadian exhibition of the entire collection of original artworks and sestudes will be held at Books and Company in Picton August 22-24. The public is invited to visit the free exhibit, meet the artists and perhaps their British writing partners. A parallel digital exhibition is being organized in the UK.

”The caliber of participating artists in 26 Atlantic Crossings is impressive,” says Wendy Matthews, Past Chair of the Prince Edward County Studio Tour. “These include sculptor David Boorne, whose work is displayed at the National Gallery in Ottawa, Stewart Jones, a gallery-owner and art director of three Juno award winning projects, and Susan Wallis, whose encaustic paintings are available through select galleries across Canada.” The original artworks and accompanying sestudes will be on display in the artists’ studios prior to the August exhibit in Picton.

Wallis is especially excited about linking her family history with the exhibit.

“My mother of British descent and my father of Polish descent crossed the Atlantic in 1956, immigrating to a new life together in Canada.”

26 Atlantic Crossings is a special project of the Prince Edward County Studio Tour, a juried event held in September.
