County cook to ladle up Soupalicious local food in Toronto

Prince Edward County cookbook author Christine Renaud will be ladling soup alongside 60 restaurant chefs and personalities at Soupalicious in Toronto this weekend.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing my soups especially because they highlight the delicious produce grown in the County,” says Renaud, who will be serving Curried Roasted Parsnip and Pear Soup, as well as Smokey Tomato Barley.

Her first cookbook, The County Cooks, was published in 2004 and featured recipes from local restaurants in Prince Edward County.

Her new book, Christine’s Vegan Kitchen, contains Renaud’s own recipes, which are vegetarian and vegan friendly.

“Plant-based diets are becoming increasingly popular,” says Renaud, who cites media attention for vegan celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Alicia Silverstone, Anne Hathaway and Woody Harrelson as increasing the level of awareness of, and convertion to, veg cuisine.

“And with Prince Edward County already recognized as a premiere food and wine destination, my presence at Soupalicious! demonstrates that we continue to be cutting edge and that we provide a wide variety of options for those visiting The County,” says Renaud.

The author stresses she is “only an enthusiastic, experienced cook” and not a professional chef and that she hopes that her book will encourage the talented culinary community in her area to expand its vegan menus.

“Being vegetarian for close to 30 years and a vegan for close to three years, I have had to teach myself to a large extent to cook plant-based meals for myself and my family,” says the cookbook author. “It’s been quite an experience and delicious education, but I’m most interested in seeing what more can be done by the talented chefs and cooks here, especially because I like to go out for dinner, too!”

Christine’s Vegan Kitchen, is available at Books & Company in Picton, or through the author’s website at www.christinesvegankitchen.com where Renaud also writes a blog chronicling her adventures as she works on her next cookbook.
