County phones in support for diabetes

Rosalie Spargo, Dedicated Canadian Diabetes Association Volunteer, Laurel Hoard, Kimberly Reid and Suzanne Staley with the Project Redial collection boxes.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects two million Canadians. Here in Prince Edward County, there are more than 2,000 residents with diabetes.
The Prince Edward Family Health Team Diabetes Education Program is available to educate and support people with diabetes and their families. The team has clinic locations in Picton, Wellington and Rossmore. The educators at the PEFHT are Registered Nurse, Certified Diabetes Educator Suzanne Staley, Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator Laurel Hoard and Registered Dietitian Kimberly Reid. All are members of the Canadian Diabetes Association Diabetes Educator Sector’s St. Lawrence Chapter.

November is Diabetes Month and each year the Prince Edward Family Health Team celebrates with various activities. Educators travel to schools and local organizations to promote the prevention and management of diabetes. For the past three years, they have also encouraged local residents and businesses to light up their buildings in blue in support of World Diabetes Day.

For the months of November and December 2010, the diabetes educators of Prince Edward County set up drop off boxes to collect used cell phones. Boxes were located in the medical clinics throughout the County.  The cell phones were collected and donated to the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Project Redial. Project Redial is a program where individuals can conveniently donate their unwanted cell phones while minimizing waste and preventing toxic chemicals from entering our landfills. The Canadian Diabetes Association receives money for each and every cell phone donated, functional or not. This year, 41 cell phones were collected in Prince Edward County.
