While Prince Edward County has stepped up to welcome three Syrian refugee families, the County’s Richard Campbell is part of the Canadian Rapid Response team deployed to Serbia to help families crossing the border to seek relief from the violence and conflict. Campbell, a firefighter with Hallowell’s division and a retired OPP Auxiliary member, was in Prešovo for five weeks, with other GlobalMedic volunteers there since November.

Before a packed house at the Wellington arena, Mayor Robert Quaiff and County CAO James Hepburn honoured Jim Dunlop with a reserved parking spot for being a community builder, supporter and champion of the County and all its communities. Dunlop was the County warden in 1997, the last before amalgamation and currently sits, for a third term, as a councillor for Wellington ward. He first coached hockey some 50 years ago in Picton, led teams to several Ontario championships, as well as an excursion to Switzerland in 1976. He is also involved in his church, volunteer community and several service groups. He spearheaded the $1.5 million drive for the community’s portion of the new arena.

County Reads 2016 participants Dorothy Speirs, Charles Morris and Ken Murray Hiliary Fennell and Melanie Dugan prepared to champion their chosen Canadian books as part of the annual event. Did you read them? Three Day Road, A Complicated Kindness, His Whole Life, Translation is a Love Affair (winner) and The Reason You Walk.

Whether they are cheering on survivors, walking the track, passing the baton to a teammate or joining in activities, this year’s Relay For Life event will be another touchstone for participants in Prince Edward County. Teams started signing up, got information and fundraising tips for the June 10 event at the Picton fairgrounds.

From the top of the county, to the bottom, and many places in between, the first harvest of the season was celebrated by thousands of people visiting Maple in the County events. A large crowd arrived at Hubbs to see two members of 424 Transport Search and Rescue Squadron from 8 Wing/CFB Trenton drop into a nearby field, by parachute. The crowd continued watching to see the Griffon helicopter land in the corn field. The military members were invited by Lake Lodge Masonic Lodge as special guests. -Ross Lees photo

A Picton man lost his life at the scene of a fire in a home at 30 Main St., Picton. Zachary Dubois was 25. His mom, sister and brother were able to escape the blaze. More than 30 firefighters battled extreme heat and dense smoke.

There were about 40 people singing, dancing, nodding heads and tapping toes at an International Women’s Day gathering in Picton. “Sing loud if you’re not dancing, and you can also dance and sing – and it doesn’t matter if you know the steps or not,” said organizer Christine Renaud.

Prince Edward County was the island country of Limeria this month – in desperate need of help following a 7.8 magnitude mock disaster earthquake The Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) landed for the training exercise.

The PECI JR Boys basketball team captured the silver medal at the Bay of Quinte championship and the silver medal at the AAA COSSA championship, hosted at PECI. The boys played 34 games this season, and finished with a record of 22 – 12.
