County’s Four Play goes for Baroque

The County’s Baroque quartet Four Play! provided listeners with an eclectic mix of rarely heard composers coupled with famous ones in a musical experience from the 17th and 18th centuries during a concert  at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Picton.
The concert opened with County artists Jane McGall, Greg Garrett, and Michael Dufault singing music by Buxtehude with the instruments. The concert included Vivaldi’s beautiful aria Nulla in mundo pax sincera, which was featured as the closing credits of the movie “Shine”, and two short duets showcasing the tenor viol and viola, an unusual and rarely heard paring of these instruments.
This concert also featured a piece composed by Elizabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (1664-1729).  Women composers are rare in any age, but at this time were virtually unknown.  Musicians included Ernie and Maryl Neufeld, violin and viola, Josie Farrar, violas da gamba and voice, and Michael Goodwin, spinet.
