The PECI Panthers girls hockey team had a tough battle Monday losing to the Bayside Devils 2-1 in the first game of the season.

“The team played very well for the first game of the season,” said head coach Laurie Spencer.

The game started out with the Panthers falling back to a strong Devil’s offence that came out hard and fast. Bayside was looking to get a goal in the first period but was shut down by goalie Maddy Rowbotham’s management of their shots and rebounds. The Panthers had a few chances in the first, but none were able to hit the back of the net.

With a score at zero going into the second, both teams were looking to score the first goal of the game. The Panthers started to come back pushing the Devils further into their own end, but were not able to beat the Devil’s goalie. Both teams were pressuring each other well but the Devils got the first goal of the game during the last few minutes of the second period.

The Panthers, determined to get a goal, came out strong. They had many chances but were not able to connect. During the last five minutes of the game Bayside got a penalty, which gave the Panthers the perfect opportunity to score. During the power play captain Abby Terpstra scored the tying goal, with assists going to Brooke Jackson and Kendra Marion. That did not discourage Bayside who, with 2:49 left in the third, got a breakaway and scored the game winning goal.

The team has a whole season in front of them, with three home games and four away games, plus a tournament in Napanee set for Dec. 21.

The first home game of the season is Dec. 6 against the Moira Trojans at the Picton arena.
