The 1974 Chevy, similar to this photo, went through the ice 20 years ago when the owner and a friend were ice fishing.
Two recreational scuba divers discovered a vehicle that had gone through the ice 20 years ago while they were diving in 27 feet of water approximately 500 feet offshore from Deseronto last Saturday.
The 1974 Chevrolet Camero was gold, covered in algae and zebra mussels.
Prince Edward OPP report the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located the vehicle. They discovered its licence plates had not been renewed since 1991 and the registered owner was a Welland, Ontario resident.
OPP detectives from the Welland area spoke with the owner who confirmed the vehicle was his. He explained that he and a friend had been ice fishing 20 years ago when the vehicle broke through the ice and sank.
The owner advised he had reported the incident to Napanee OPP at the time and later signed the vehicle over to a salvage company and believed the matter was finished.
The police investigation into the matter is now complete.
