Expect nuisance flooding with forecast heavy rainfall and snow melt

Environment Canada predicts more than 25mm of rainfall is possible in Prince Edward County overnight Tuesday through Wednesday and along with a warm 8 degrees C, and runoff from snowmelt, nuisance flooding can be expected.
A special weather statement was issued Tuesday as the frozen ground is not as able to absorb expected rainfall Tuesday night through Wednesday.
Rain, heavy at times, and mild temperatures up to 8 degrees Wednesday are expected. With a risk of thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon and evening, local rainfall amounts in excess of 25 mm are possible.
Dave Eastcott, Water Resources Technologist with Quinte Conservation says runoff from rain and snow melt will create a rise in water levels on small creeks.
“Nuisance flooding is likely to occur around small watercourses, urban areas, and ditches. Large river systems and inland lakes will not respond to increased flows and are not expected to flood at this time.”
He notes that during the advisory, in effect until (or updated before) March 10, all ice surfaces should be considered dangerous and should be avoided.
Residents in flood prone or low-lying areas are reminded to take the necessary precautions to protect property. Ensure sump pumps are in good working condition and have access to a portable backup generator and pump. Help reduce ponding by keeping ditches, culverts, and storm drains clear from obstructions.
