Express condolences to Layton’s family

Watch this fine tribute to Jack Layton from the folks at This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

A book of condolence for the family of Jack Layton is available at MP Daryl Kramp’s constituency office in Belleville for constituents to sign.

“Jack Layton was an outstanding Canadian,” said Kramp. “He was truly committed to his cause and passionate about his beliefs. His courage, optimism and determination will be missed in the House of Commons by all of us. My wife, Carol Ann and I offer sincere condolences to his family and friends.”

The NDP leader died Monday battling a second bout of cancer. He was 61.

Layton’s casket will be in Ottawa today for two days of public viewing. A state funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall, Toronto.

Lorraine Segato will perform the NDP campaign song ‘Rise Up’ and former Ontario NDP leader and UN ambassador Stephen Lewis will deliver a eulogy. An honour guard of NDP MPs will be with Layton in the foyer.

Visitation on Parliament Hill begins at 12:30 for the public and closes at 8 p.m. Thursday is from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Layton will lie in repose at Toronto City Hall Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Heritage Canada notes state funerals are traditionally held for current and former governors general, priministers and current cabinet ministers. Former governor general Romeo LeBlanc was the last person to lie in state in 2009.

The book of condolence will be available in Kramp’s Belleville constituency office at 1 Millennium Parkway from noon today until 3pm on Friday, Aug. 26th after which time it will be delivered by Kramp to the Layton family.
