The eyes of the world will be on London on July 27th for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, which is expected to have a global television audience of more than a billion people. County residents and visitors are invited to watch the opening ceremony live in high definition at the Regent Theatre Friday, from 4-7pm. Award-winning film directors Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, The Beach and Slumdog Millionaire) and Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) will oversee what is sure to be the UK’s biggest-ever live show. Admission free of charge (donations welcome).

The must-watch for local residents for the London Games, of course, is Brian Price, of Ameliasburgh, 2008 Olympic champion men’s eight coxswain. Price is with a new team this round:  Gabriel Bergen, Douglas Csima, Rob Gibson, Conlin McCabe, Malcolm Howard, Andrew Byrnes, Jeremiah Brown and Will Crothers.

In late May, the team set a world record at the World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland.  A few days later they struggled, but still finished third behind Germany and Great Britain. But Price told the media the team “has the abililty to do it…It doesn’t matter what you did in the previous three years or even the previous race. If you want to win it badly enough, you can win it on that day.”

The team will be in the spotlight Wednesday,  Aug. 1 in the A final in London.

From his website, Brian says:
“At the age of seven I battled leukemia in a hospital bed, never thinking that cancer would help shape me into an Olympic Champion 25 years later. My ten year rowing career culminated on the podium in Beijing, and I realized after I received my gold medal that the journey I had taken to get there was filled with anecdotes that can be applied in everyday life. There is a champion in each and every one of us, and we must continually strive for success in business, academics and our family life. I want to share my story to teach, inspire, motivate and illustrate to people that we are all capable of reaching the potential that lies deep within ourselves.”
